Haywards Heath RFC Women’s squad travelled to Hove on Saturday for their latest festival fixture, beginning the day with a moment of reflection. Before kick-off, both teams observed a minute’s silence for Emma Makosz-Lawrence, an active and much-loved member of the Club who sadly passed away earlier this month. Emma had become a staunch supporter of the women’s team as it set out on its pathway to competitive play. The Hellhounds played the day in her honour.
Match 1: Heath Hellhounds 0 – Hove 22
Heath made a slow start while Hove were sharp from the opening whistle. Despite hardworking defence and strong carries, the Hellhounds found themselves under pressure early on, allowing the home side to dominate territory and possession. Hove who fielded a stronger team than in previous encounters, finished deserved winners in this opening fixture.
Match 2: Heath Hellhounds 46 – Portsmouth and Bognor Baabaas 0
The Hellhounds delivered a huge turnaround in their second match, showing confidence, structure and power throughout.
The scoring opened with Jen Eustace, who powered over for her first ever try for the Club after a huge shift in both games. Captain El Davey then struck twice in quick succession. Her first came from supporting Florrie Taylor-Waters and taking a pop pass through the defensive line. Her second was a pick-and-go from five metres out, driving through defenders to score.
The backs then came alive. Quick, accurate hands across the field created space for winger Mairead Gallagher to finish out wide. Recognising the success of taking this route to the try line, Heath repeated the pattern, sending Gallagher over for her second with another well-worked attacking move.
Then, from halfway, Megan Cole powered through the middle, breaking tackles in classic Cole fashion to score a brilliant solo try. Debutant Liv Hibbert added her name to the list of scorers, showing rapid pace down the wing to secure her first try for the Club.
The final Heath try came from Chloe Young, who refused to be stopped, dragging three defenders with her as she crossed the line.
Throughout the performance, Jen Eustace continued her outstanding work rate, Florrie Taylor-Waters made huge impact in the carry and contact areas, and Lizzy Bourne, playing at No. 8, added three conversions from her trusty boot.
A superb 46–0 win closed the day, marking a proud performance for the Hellhounds who gained more competitive experience as a squad. A fitting tribute to Emma.
