They are: Robert Ure, Paul Odell, George Cook, Max Clark, Max Sommers, Ciaran Walker and Ben Noble (pictured). All are involved in the Harlequins Developing Player Programme progressing, for 16 year olds, to the Junior Elite Player Development Group. Working with county coaches in Sussex (headed by Richard Siggs) and Surrey, the players have been identified from the age of 13 and work with Quins Academy coaches including Jody Levett, Simon Stodart, and Steve May from Heath, to nurture their talent. The six Heath youngsters are all keen to follow in the footsteps of their Heath forerunners:
• Prop Joe Marler who has fifteen England caps at prop and hopes to add another in next weekend’s opening 6 Nations clash in Paris.
• Flanker Luke Wallace who made his first appearance for England Saxons last Saturday in their narrow defeat in Dublin.
• Number 8 James Chisholm who captained England Under 18s last year and is the youngest player to have appeared in the Premiership for Quins.
• James’s elder brother Ross, winger/full back, who is sadly sidelined for the season with a knee problem that’s put his career on hold following England Under 18 appearances and an impressive run in the Quins Premiership team.
There are other Heath players operating in the professional ranks as well as the Quins Quartet:
• Gloucester, England and British and Irish Lions centre, Billy Twelvetrees;
• former Wales and now Biarritz prop Ben Broster;
• Edinburgh second row Perry Parker who made a try-scoring return to action with Melrose on Saturday following a shoulder operation;
• Ben and Max Maidment in the Championship for Jersey and Cornish Pirates respectively.
Roy Winters, who picked up two full England caps in South Africa a few years ago has now retired from the pro ranks with Bristol but is about to make an appearance for Heath Vets against Warlingham in the Evergreen Cup.
We’ll look forward to Robert, Paul, George, Max, Ciaran and Ben joining their ranks and to continuing to nurture home-grown talent at Haywards Heath Rugby Club. Our aim is to support all our youth players in maximising their potential whether in reaching the highest levels of the professional game or simply enjoying their senior rugby at university, in colleges and at local clubs.
