HHRFC is delighted to be fulfilling its stated ambition to launch a Women’s rugby team this season. With the old Clubhouse facilities unable to support women’s rugby, the Club has wasted no time in pulling together a squad of players, mainly all new to rugby, for its inaugural season of women’s rugby in the new HHRFC Clubhouse at Whitemans Green.
Having recruited throughout the summer months and encouraged women to get active by way of free weekly strength and conditioning training throughout July and August, the new women’s squad started training in late August. This coming Sunday they will play their first match away at Bognor RFC, 2pm KO.
The coaching team, led by Daniel Vander and Jon Graham, recognises that it has been a steep learning curve for all the new players involved, the majority of whom have never played rugby before, but with a squad of over 30 players and growing, all are enthused and looking forward to their first match. Further matches are lined up at home on Sunday 26 October and away at Hove RFC on Saturday 15 November with more to come thereafter.
Commenting on the new development, Daniel Vander, HHRFC Chair said “It goes without saying that we could not have pulled the new squad together without the generous support of a number of existing and new Club sponsors who have contributed to the new women’s team kit and support for the squad including the cost of travel to away matches. The Club and the whole women's squad are very grateful for their support.”
The Club extends a huge thank you to GEW, Kalimex, Bespoke Law Services, Handcross Butchers, The Cuckfield Clinic, TA Cole & Co - Fencing, Woodfield Waggers, Lee Sadler – Farrier and Flex Physio.
Anyone wishing to join the new HHRFC women’s squad is welcome regardless of age and experience. The emphasis is on enjoyment, fun and inclusiveness for all and new joiners do not need to have played rugby before. This is the beginning of an exciting chapter for the Club – all are welcome.
Women’s training is on Thursday evenings at Whitemans Green 6:20pm to 7:30pm and Sundays 12 noon to 1:30pm. Please feel free to just turn up on the day or contact the HHRFC Women’s Captain, El Davey by email on womensrugby@hhrfc.co.uk.
