Heath U16 girls shine for Sussex

Four Heath players feature against Middlesex

The Sussex Girls U16 rugby squad produced a stirring performance against Middlesex last weekend, and at the heart of it were four players from Haywards Heath Rugby Club. Their contributions not only helped Sussex secure victories in the 10 aside 4 team set up, but also highlighted the growing strength of the HHRFC girls programme, which proudly supplied 10% of the county squad.

de Luca was asked to step into the forwards, a role outside her usual position. She responded with fearless tackling against bigger opponents, made ground up the pitch, and threw herself into lineouts and defensive recoveries.

Wollaston came agonisingly close to scoring, driving hard towards the try line only to be held up by two defenders. Her attacking runs and strong defensive tackles kept Middlesex under pressure throughout.

Brotherton Smith marked her return to form with Sussex’s first try of the day. The move began with Kamara securing possession at the breakdown before the ball was worked wide. Brotherton Smith powered through defenders on the wing to score, her first try for Sussex. She followed up with sharp jackalling, strong carries, and crunching tackles that highlighted her huge potential.

Kamara stood out as arguably the strongest player on the field. Her defensive dominance was demonstrated by one of the game’s biggest tackles, stopping a Middlesex runner in her tracks and driving her backwards. She didn’t miss a tackle, won every ruck she contested, and made consistent yards with ball in hand. Her ability to offload at the right moment added another dimension to Sussex’s attack.

Despite facing physically larger opposition, the Sussex girls never backed down. They tackled hard, supported one another, and celebrated every positive contribution. Mistakes were quickly forgotten, replaced by encouragement and determination. The collective spirit was as impressive as the individual performances. The set pieces were executed in a an accurate drilled manner and yielded tries as a result.

For Haywards Heath Girls Rugby, the day was a milestone. The Heath players not only competed at county level but excelled, bringing back invaluable experience and confidence. The fixture placed HHRFC firmly on the map as a Club committed to producing talent capable of shaping county outcomes.

Parents, coaches and supporters left proud, knowing the girls had shown courage, skill, and teamwork. For the players themselves, the match was proof that they belong at this level — and a reminder that Haywards Heath is building something special across its dedicated girls squads.
