HHRFC Big Sisters Initiative inspires next generation of Girls’ Rugby

Haywards Heath Rugby Football Club took another powerful step forward in championing girls’ and women’s sport recently, as more than 40 girls came together for the latest instalment of the Club’s Big Sisters Initiative.

The session brought players from across the age groups onto one pitch, with older girls stepping into leadership roles - coaching, guiding and inspiring the younger players in a vibrant display of what community rugby can achieve.

The event was led by Girls’ Coaching Lead Kev McDonald, whose energy and vision have been instrumental in building a thriving pathway for female players at the club. But this session had an extra spark: the presence of Irish international star Aoife Wafer, whose involvement lifted the occasion from special to unforgettable.

Wafer’s impact was immediate and profound. For young players - many of whom are just discovering the sport - having a current international athlete training alongside them was more than a thrill. It was a statement. A message that girls’ rugby matters, that their ambitions are valid, and that the pathway from grassroots to the highest level is real and reachable. Her encouragement, insight and genuine enthusiasm left a mark on players, parents and coaches alike.

HHRFC’s commitment to girls’ rugby has grown year on year, and this season marks a milestone: the club’s first year culminating in senior women’s rugby. The pathway is now complete - from minis to adult rugby - ensuring girls can begin their journey at any age and stay with the Club for life.

Partnerships with neighbouring clubs continue to strengthen this growth. The U14 girls, for example, are thriving in their joint programme with Uckfield and are eagerly preparing for their Sussex Cup semi final at Whitemans Green on 8th March.

Russ Stobbs, Head of Minis Rugby, summed up the spirit of the day:
“The Big Sisters initiative perfectly showcases our commitment to ensuring rugby is an attractive and viable option for girls of all ages. We are dedicated to making HHRFC an inclusive and friendly club where all can flourish.”

The next Big Sisters event will take place at Whitemans Green on 29th March and is open to all girls curious to give rugby a try - whether they’ve played before or are stepping onto a pitch for the very first time.

With role models like Aoife Wafer, passionate coaches, and a Club culture built on belonging and inclusivity, HHRFC is proving that the future of women’s rugby is bright, bold and already well underway.
