It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Steve Heaton, former First Team Coach and a true legend of Haywards Heath Rugby Club, who passed away peacefully on 8th October, surrounded by his family.
Steve was an inspirational leader, an exceptional coach and a driving force behind one of the most successful periods in the Club's history during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Under his leadership, Haywards Heath achieved unprecedented success, rising from Sussex Division Two to become the first Sussex club ever to gain promotion to National Three (now restructured as National Two). It was a remarkable achievement and one that remains among the proudest moments in the Club's history.
But Steve's legacy extended far beyond the First Team. His passion, determination and ability to inspire those around him helped build strength and success throughout the Club. The Second and Third Teams flourished under his leadership and that of his coaching team, with the Third Team achieving the extraordinary feat of going unbeaten throughout their Sussex Division One league campaign.
Steve's coaching talents were also recognised at county level, where he enjoyed considerable success with Sussex. Such was the strength of the players and culture he helped develop at Haywards Heath that, on occasions, 13 of the 15 starting players representing Sussex came from our Club. A truly remarkable testament to his coaching ability and the standards he inspired.
For those fortunate enough to have played under Steve, his legendary team talks, stirring speeches and unwavering belief in his players will never be forgotten. He had an extraordinary ability to motivate, to demand the very best and to make every player believe they could achieve something special.
Steve was a formidable character, a natural leader who commanded respect and was certainly not someone to be challenged lightly! Yet behind that commanding presence was a man of immense warmth, kindness and generosity. Those who knew him best will remember not only his strength and determination, but also his softer side, his loyalty, his compassion and the genuine care he showed for those around him.
Steve didn't simply coach rugby teams. He built belief, created lifelong friendships and helped shape a Club and a generation of players. His influence reached far beyond the rugby pitch, and his legacy will live on in the hearts and memories of everyone whose life he touched.
The Club will be organising a special matchday lunch in Steve's memory, bringing together former players, friends and members to celebrate his life and the extraordinary contribution he made to Haywards Heath Rugby Club. Further details will follow.
Our thoughts, love and deepest sympathies are with Sheila, Alex, Jo, his brother Chris, and all of Steve's family at this incredibly difficult time.
Please know that the Haywards Heath Rugby Club family stands beside you, now and always.
Rest in peace, Steve. A true legend, an unforgettable coach and, above all, a wonderful man.
**You will never be forgotten.
