Missed opportunities cost Heath

Missed opportunities cost Heath

Russ Stobbs

Old Reigatians 33 Haywards Heath 21

An away trip to league new boys Old Reigatians went horribly wrong for Heath in the first half hour when they went 26-0 down in a game they could have been winning.

Heath started well and looked the sharper of the two sides with their backs threatening to unleash. The pressure was released from a scrum penalty and from the lineout ORs set up a maul from which their flanker strolled in down the blindside for 7-0.

Heath came steaming back and good interplay from the forwards saw them stopped a foot short of the try line with an equalising score seemingly inevitable only for some white line fever to kick in and the ball being turned over. Heath continued attacking and the backs fashioned an overlap wide left in the the ORs 22 but their problems continued when the final pass was intercepted and run in the length of the pitch by the home side's winger for 12-0.

Worse was to come when Heath compounded conceding a penalty by illegally stopping the tap penalty when not retreating leading to a yellow card. ORs were swift to make the numerical advantage count kicking to the corner and then driving over for 19-0.

Heath kept playing and once again found themselves deep in ORs territory only to see the ball stripped in the tackle and cleared with a raking long kick. The OR chasers were quick to pile on the pressure charging down the Heath clearance for 26-0 on the half hour mark. Four tries conceded all from Heath mistakes when parity would have been a fairer reflection of the opportunities created.

The second half saw a much improved performance and within 10 minutes of the restart Heath were on the scoreboard when backrow Josh Salisbury drove through defenders under the posts. Jaime Thurston converted for 26-7.

A fabulous 50-22 kick from ORs saw them find territory in the Heath redzone from where their impressive prop bulldozed his way through to restore the points difference at 33-7.

Heath started to get a control of the game and a blistering break from Josh Pratt saw him outpace defenders for 33-14 and a short while later Alex Harrison who had moved into the centre from the pack crashed over for 33-21. As hard as they tried Heath couldn't get a further score to obtain the bonus points and disappointingly came away with nothing to show for their second half comeback.

The Heath coaches will be looking for more accuracy and cool heads on the park next weekend when Heath face Bec Old Boys at Whitemans Green.
