Heath/Crawley 37 - East Sussex Barbarians 22

Haywards Heath/Crawley Girls U14 squad took on East Sussex Barbarians (ESB) who are combination of girls from Hastings, Seaford and Uckfield and the resulting match at Whitemans Green was a competitive display from both sides. The match started strongly for Heath with a strong burst from Naomi Hamilton the tight head prop, who broke three tackles then sprinted to score underneath the post converting her own try. Heath/Crawley continued to press with Daisy Harden the loose head prop scoring on the wide right after good build up work by fullback Ilaria De-Luca.

At this point the ESB seemed to wake up and came roaring back with a pacy score of their own from the left wing. Heath captain Kaddie Camarra then started to impose herself on the game with some typically barnstorming runs scoring her first try. There was immediate response from the ESB’s right wing again showing real pace to round the defence and score in the right hand corner.

Rosa McDonald, Heath's outside centre then showed good strength to go over after some sharp handling and running lines from Heath down the left hand side. The supporters and the squad were both left breathless after this action packed first half with the score line sitting at 22 - 10. The second half started brightly for Heath as Izzy Williams powered up the middle with would-be tacklers lying in her wake. Momentum swung again as the ESB’s showed their determination and skill by scoring two more tries in quick succession.

The score was now nicely poised at 27- 22 before Heath Captain Kaddie Camarra took matters into her own hands with a pick and go from the back of the scrum on the half way line and showed pace and strength to finish in the right hand corner taking it to 32-22 and it was fitting that she had the final word with a shorter range effort to make it a 37-22 win at the final whistle. A big thanks from the girls squad goes to Gavan Collins, a Heath club referee who regularly gives up his weekends so that young girls and boys can play rugby.

This game concludes the league games for the season and means that Heath/Crawley have won the waterfall league for the second half of the season. Two fixtures remain, with two touring sides from Surrey visiting Heath at the end of the month, followed by both U12 and U14 girls sides participating in the Worthing 10 a-side Girls Festival over May Bank Holiday.

Any girls in the area thinking about taking a closer look at rugby, HHRFC is running a girls only rugby course this summer. It is a full day girls rugby camp free of charge at Whitemans Green on Wednesday 28 August and all girls over age 10 are welcome. For more information email rugby@hhrfc.co.uk
