Big guns take a back seat while Heath show depth

The below strength Heath U16's with only 13 available players to travel pulled off a handsome victory against a high calibre Sutton & Epsom side. Held as a curtain raiser to the Vets Evergreen Cup / Mike Mason Cup it proved a luck omen as the Vets also w

Heath produced a gritty and determined performance against a strong Surrey Division 2 side, Sutton & Epsom, on Sunday. The scoreline ended 29-10 to Heath.

Arriving with less than the necessary 15 players, and having to borrow is often enough to unsettle a side but Heath now has strength in depth and players often overshadowed came to the fore.

Harley White was magnificent. He drove time and time again into Sutton territory creating a platform for Harry Muschamp to take up second phase ball. Elliott Ward and Matt Cleary provided the clear outs and Clarke set his forward-dominated backs in pursuit of the try line.

For the first 20 minutes the game remained scoreless but a sustained period of close driving brought a try for White who crashed over from short range.

David Field was next from a similar build up, and his newly found athleticism was a problem for the opposition all day.

Sutton were prepared to release their backs when they could and replied after the break. Heath's introduction of Ben Bradshaw into the game brought extra bulk and aggression, and despite carrying an injury, his attitude and application were excellent.

The game reached a scrappy point for a while with the referee not exerting discipline at the breakdown, and while Harry Crocker was dishing out his own punishment to the offenders, Sutton scored out wide to bring them to within a score.

In seasons past, this may have been a turning point for Heath, but they showed character and scored a sensational try through the midfield. Bradshaw took the ball to the gain line and found Field who had picked a sublime line to crash through the Sutton centre pairing. Clarke as ever was on his shoulder but it was the offload from Field that provided the class and with 15 yards to go Clarke somehow wriggled and drove his way through several opposition defenders to score, and added the conversion too.

From the restart Erritt, playing an unfamiliar role at centre, worked the blind well and found Edwards some extra space. The 60 yard dash from him to under the posts was pure class, weaving, stepping and adding blistering pace to leave Sutton in his wake.

Soon after, Erritt found Crocker on the right who showed Sutton's winger and fullback a clean pair of heels to score his first of the season.

A strong performance all round. Huge improvements from players like Muschamp who deserved MoM for the hard work he did in carrying and tackling.
A big improvement from the developing Ashley Brindle who went close to scoring, but also chased and tackled hard. Harley White demonstrated his enormous appetite for carrying the ball, Crocker for his versatility to play out of position, Ben Bradshaw for his efforts under injury, Edwards for a try he'll always remember. Often unsung in the training paddock, this week they became the heroes.

Well done boys!! Bring on Heathfield!!
