Heath boys won the admiration of the opposing coaches through their communication and team play, proving that recent training with a focus on getting the basics right is definitely beginning to pay off. Admitting that they could ‘learn a thing or two’ about team work from Heath, Horsham relied on a couple of star players to claim victory in the second half after Heath smashed them in the first.
Quickly getting on the score sheet was a priority for the boys and they started strong. Barney Scott’s return from injury was rewarded with the first try of the match and Lewis Goodall pushed through with a second, neatly converted by Will Goodwin.
By half time, Heath were up 14-22 thanks to incessant tackling from Ben Eustace, another try from Tom Banks and some good thinking from Christian Streater.
A slight hesitance to tackle in the second half gave Horsham’s fresh, fast and heavy backs just enough space to get to speed, bursting through lines to win back the score sheet. But the Heath boys did not let their heads drop, knowing that if they each focus on their job and play the game they’ve been practicing they can be unstoppable.
A brilliant stretch of play in front of the away spectators made this point; an offload from Bobby Collins to Christian Streater who sent the ball sailing down the line to eventually find Kai Jutson on the wing, reliably nailing the try to cheers from the Heath fans in the last few minutes.
A lot of positives to take away as the boys prepare for their league match against Heathfield and Waldron this weekend.
