Haywards Heath U13s got their season off to a fantastic start with a convincing 76-0 win over Midhurst. Straight from the kick off Heath were camped in their opponents half with the forwards dominating the breakdown and set piece. It took the Heath backs a little bit longer to settle into the game but, with the half backs Ieuan Phillips and Callum Macaulay providing plenty of good service down the line, it didn't take long for their superiority to show as well.
After nearly 10 minutes of relentless pressure Heath were rewarded with their first try from Miles Smith who rolled away from a maul near the Midhurst try line to score in the corner. Soon after a second try followed when Jackson King used his power and strength to crash through the Midhurst defence and over the line. It was then the turn of the Heath backs to score with the ball going down the line to Tom Lewis on the wing who showed his opposite number a clean pair of heels to score under the posts. Next up was Matt Jenkins who, with some solid scrummagging by the Heath forwards, was able to score with a great No 8 pick up from 5m out. The first half was finished off with further tries from Tom Lewis and Matt Jenkins which, with the extra conversion points scored by Callum Macaulay and Joe Ratcliff, left Heath with a very comfortable lead at half-time.
The second half started with Heath picking up where they left off and it wasn't long before Jackson King was on the scoresheet again, catching the ball from a lineout in his own half and running the length of the pitch to score under the posts. A similar try from Jackson followed shortly afterwards, this time from the halfway line. Next to score was Dom King who was rewarded from his efforts to chase the ball down when it bounced up kindly for him 10m out allowing him to score under the posts. With just minutes to go, there was time for just one more score and after a great team effort to move the ball up the pitch, the ball went down the line to Joe Cass on the wing who scored in the corner.
This was a very impressive win for the Heath boys and a great start to their campaign to gain promotion at the end of the season.
