Close matches and heroic performances order of the day fo U8's at Uckfield

Brent Mathews1 May 2014 - 07:51

The Uckfield tournament consisted of of four pool matches. It saw our guys, some of whom have not had too much tournament time this year, pitched against some very skilled and well drilled teams‎.

The day started with the first game against Lewis‎. All the lads pitched in well scoring good individual tries. More importantly the boys started to link together in attack to produce some good supporting combination tries, which became a feature of the day. Sadly the other feature of the day was our poor tagging. Ultimately this led to our down fall, with Heath losing 10 tries to 8.

‎The next game was against East Grinstead. Learning lessons from the first game, the guys set out determine to get a win. This time the tagging was greatly improved and the boys continued to support each other well in open play. The quick link up play to combine passes and provide support to the ultimate try scorer resulted in a win for Heath 8 tries to 7. Special mentions go to Bradley Bover for playing on after an obvious injury. However the day was saved by (little bro') Oscar making his debut for the U8s for stepping into the gap. Small, very fast, snake hipped and scoring two individual tries; hence forth he shall be known as "Turbo" (watch the film guys). Thank you Oscar!

‎The third match against Crawley was an evenly matched affair. Again good open play combinations of James Davies, Bradley Bover and Hector Hosking produced tries for all three guys in turn. As did the combinations of Joshua Jooste, Josh Cheesmur and Oliver Magee. Sadly Heath just missed out on a win with the score 6:7 to Crawley.

The last match ofthe day was against Shoreham, with all features of the day, both good and bad, coming together. Whilst the excellent combination link up in open was in evidence time and again, so was the poor tagging. Ultimately ‎a combination of tired legs and Shoreham's luck at not being penalised for being consistently 'off side', meant that Heath narrowly missed out losing 6:7. Although it should be noted that recognition of Shoreham's unpenalised offside and an apology by the referee was later received‎.

I'm really proud of these boys, they were only six in number (well, six and a half !)‎ and were up against well drilled squads with a full subs list.‎

Well done to all the lads and thank you to their parents for the support provided throughout the day.

Phil Davies (HHRFC U8s Coach)
